'14 Jul – John Lewis Michel II is born to John Lewis Michel and Elizabeth Howard Michel in New Jersey on 15 Jun 1914 according to the 1915 NJ Census and the 1920 Federal Census. No birth certificate nor baptism record have been discovered; it is presumed he was born at their home at 62 Grove St, Haddonfield, New Jersey but he could have been born at JLM's mother's (Anna Braun Michel Fredrick) house in Hazleton. Later documents have JLM 2nd being born in PA.
Sep '15 – Gladys Jones is born 12 Sep 1915 in Nanticoke, PA to R Jones and Catherine Davis Jones. They lived at 925 S Market St, Nanticoke. Her father was a lamp manufacturer.
20 Jun 1920 – JLM 2nd's brother Richard (Dick) is born in Hazleton, PA at the paternal grandmother's home (Anna Braun Michel Fredrick).
Jun '24 – Jack gets "Best Decorated Bike" award in the Bicycle Parade in Hazleton. JLM and family were living at 36 N James St; about a half-mile from Anna Michel Fredrick's home.
Oct '26 – Jack earns his First Class Scout badge.
Feb '27– JLM and family leaving Hazleton for Philadelphia area for his new job.
Jul '28 – Jack Michel, Philadelphia attended Boy Scout Camp Rotawanis in North St John (Drums, PA). A 2002 posting on a related website:"Camp Rotawanis is a former Boy Scout Summer Camp currently owned by the Anthracite Scouting Organization, a non-profit company with no affiliation to the Boy Scouts of America. The camp is leased to organizations (primarily Boy Scouts) at minimal fees all year round."
Sep '27 – Jack enters Germantown Academy (GA), an historic and distinguished school in Fort Washington, PA. From the school's website:
"On December 6, 1759, a group of citizens, concerned about the education of their children, met with Daniel Mackinett at the Green Tree Inn on Germantown Road. At this meeting, The Germantown Union School (now known as Germantown Academy) was founded."
Jun '29 – Jack was awarded the Colonial Dames Prize at a pre-commencement ceremony by Mrs. Henry Wolf Bickle of the National Society of Colonial Dames. Her husband was an eminent Philadelphia lawyer.
Feb '32 – Jack belonged to the Belfry Club at GA. The Belfry Club is the nation's oldest, continuously-run high school dramatic club. For their last production of Jack's tenure, on 5 Feb 1932, Jack played Mr. Laker in a performance at the Bellevue-Stratford hotel (a dance followed). According to an IMDB page for a TV movie version of "The Queen's Husband" by Robert E Sherwood he wrote in 1928. The story line is: "The hapless king of a small European nation must put up with a domineering queen, a daughter who wants to elope with her boyfriend, a peasant revolt and a scheming son who wants to be king himself and is plotting to take advantage of the situation."
Apr '32 – Jack belonged to the Glee club. He took Miss Miriam Silcox to his Senior Dance held at the Manheim Cricket Club on 8 Apr 1932. It is assumed that the Manheim Cricket Club is now called the "The Germantown Cricket Club" at 411 Manheim St, Philadelphia.
'32 – Jack's address is on Jericho Rd.
Dec '38 – Jack and Gladys Jones of Nanticoke, PA become engaged. As Gladys was a graduate of Abington Memorial Hospital, it is assumed she had a degree in nursing.
An obituary said that Jack attended the Drexel Institute of Technology and that he later studied at the American Institute of Thermal Research. A review of Drexel yearbooks for the relevant time periods did not have Jack as a graduate; it may be he attended classes there part time or took executive courses there. The American Institute of Thermal Research was a section of the American Radiator Company, a company that Jack worked for at some period.
Jun '39 – Jack marries Gladys Jones of Nanticoke, PA on 17 Jun 1939.
Jun '39 – Jack and Gladys are married at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Wyncote, PA. They honeymoon in Canada. They will reside at 94 Church St in Macungie, PA.
Apr '40 – Jack and Gladys are living Macungie based on '40 Federal Census. Jack made $2000 in 1939 (equivalent to ~ $45,000 in 2024). His employment is listed as sales engineer in heating and plumbing industry. Oddly, he has his birthplace recorded as Pennsylvania. Jack worked for Columbia Radiator Company, whose Main Office and Factory was at 3400 Walnut St in McKeesport, PA and in Philadelphia, PA at York and American Sts. They had branch offices at 39th and Wallace Sts, Chicago, IL; 429 Adams St, Newark, NJ; and 450 Rutherford Ave in Boston.
Oct '40 – Jack's draft card has his birth place as Philadelphia; his employer as Colombia Radiator Co in Philadelphia (as above); height of 5'9'' and weighing 188 pounds -- a BMI of 27.8 that is considered overweight.
Mar '42 – Jack is employed by the Bendix Aviation Corporation at the Philadelphia Division. In Dec '42, he became Vice-Chairman of Wage Control Board. During this period, Gladys and JLM 3rd were living in Abington, PA.
Apr '45 – JLM 3rd is born 7 Apr 1945.
Nov '49 – Jack dies of a heart attack on 16 Nov. He died at home in Yorklyn, DE. He was buried in Hillside Cemetery, Roslyn, PA in a plot adjacent to his parents. He was employed by the National Vulcanized Fibre Company at the time of his death. He was formerly employed by the Bendix Aviation Corporation.
April '50 – Gladys (34 yrs) and John 2nd (4 yrs) are living at 206 E Grand St, Wilkes-Barre based on 1950 US Census. She was not working nor seeking employment based on the census record.
Nov '50 – Gladys is reported in the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader to be a member of the Nanticoke High School Alumni Association ; evidently she moved back near her birth home following Jack's death.
Oct '51 – Gladys is a nurse at the Northeastern Pennsylvania Regional Center in Wilkes-Barre.
Feb '52 – Gladys' home is still at 206 E Grand St, Wilkes-Barre.
Mar '53 – Gladys and Robert J Challenger's marriage license announcement appears in the newspaper on 5 Mar 1953.
Various articles in the Wilkes-Barre newspaper states Gladys did charity work related to the Junior Cambrian Club in Nanticoke. A reference indicated that it is/was a Welsh women's organization. A 1956 April article said a meeting would take place at her home at 206 E Grand St, Nanticoke. A May '56 article said she, as "chaplin (sic), gave the invocation" at a meeting.
Apr '58 – JLM and Bessie visit John 3rd at Gladys' Challenger home at 386 Green St, Nanticoke.
Nov '63 – Robert J. Challenger, Gladys' second husband, dies of a "heart seizure"; he was 47 years old.
Oct '64 – Gladys is a member of the Women's Committee of the Wyoming Valley Chapter, American Institute of Banking.
Nov '66 – Gladys marries Atherton F. Clifford of Kingston on 5 Nov 1966 at the Nebo Baptist Church in Nanticoke, PA. John 3rd was an attendant at the ceremony. They will live at 380 Reynolds St, Kingston, PA. In May of 1970, Gladys is now a member of the Craftsmen's Club in Wilkes-Barre and Nanticoke (perhaps same group?).
Oct '73 – A newspaper article listed Gladys as receiving a training certificate as an employee of Hampton House Nursing Home in Wilkes-Barre.
'76 onwards – Gladys involved in the Nanticoke Chapter 174, Order of the Eastern Star(OES) and their various social activities, e.g., a garden party, a trip to Valley Forge.
Sep '79 – Gladys is President of Nanticoke Craftsmen Ladies Auxiliary.
Feb '81 – Gladys is chaplain of Nanticoke Chapter 174 of the OES.
Jun '82 – Gladys is elected president of the Nanticoke Craftsmen Ladies Auxiliary. In Jun '83, she was retiring from her position.
Oct '83 – Gladys is member of Greater Nanticoke Area Blood Council that support blood donation drives in the community.
Jun '84 Gladys has title of "associate matron" (3rd-highest officer in an OES chapter) as per an article regarding the OES. In Jun '85, she was described as "the worthy matron" (the presiding officer of an OES chapter).
Feb '86 – Gladys continues her work on the blood drive organization's drives. She continues involvement in Nanticoke Craftsmen Ladies Auxiliary as well.

Jan '91 – Atherton Clifford dies on 25 Jan 1991 in Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, PA. He was 75 years old.
Jun 2004 Gladys dies on 26 Jun 2004 in Mercy Hospital in Wilkes-Barre, PA; she was 88 years old. No death certificate has been discovered. She is buried in Hanover Cemetery in Hanover, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. John 3rd was living in New York city as written in her obituary. John is also buried in this cemetary.
